Beast in the Sky

Oil on Canvas, 12" x 16"
Often, when I'm planning a composition, the idea that begins it isn't a scene or occurance that inspired it. It's more of a concept. In this one, I was exploring a few different things at the same time. 1) There was some material exploration: I was trying out a putty medium. 2) I wanted to work with a red/green color relationship. And 3) I had this image of a blood red moon looking downward menacingly, stuck in my head.
This moon was the only image I started with. It felt predatory to me. As I worked, I wanted to enhance that feeling, and the rest of the composition grew around that.
